Palo Cedro, California is located just eight miles east of Redding in Upstate California - near the foothills of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Its population was 1,247 at the 2000 census. Just 5 miles from the Redding Municipal Airport, the towns of Bella Vista, Millville, Shingletown, Oak Run, Whitmore, and Round Mountain each lie within a fifteen-mile radius of Palo Cedro.

The earliest history of Palo Cedro (PAL-oh SED-row) comes from the diary of John Work. It is known that he and a group from the Hudson Bay Fur Traders passed along Cow Creek through the area now known as Palo Cedro in 1832. In 1883, a post office was established for this area which at that time was known as Albertson; the name was later changed to Roberts(1885) and, finally, to Palo Cedro - meaning "Tall Cedar" - in 1893.

In the early 1890s, T.W.H. Shannahan and Joe Enright bought 30 acres of land from Lem Benton and had it divided into 12 lots. Their dream of a town never materialized and the tall cedar tree for which the site had been named was cut down. Then, in 1897 (or shortly before), the California Shasta Eastern Railroad was constructed from Anderson to Bella Vista passing through the settlement of Palo Cedro. Miners used this railroad, as did the Terry Lumber Company at Bella Vista. The train brought groceries and mail to the villages along its route. It also had a passenger car. By the early 1900s the stage route went from Redding through Palo Cedro, Millville, Oak Run, and on to Fall River Mills.

As Palo Cedro continued to grow throughout the new century more services were needed, and the first independently-owned pharmacy opened in August of 1975. Don't be surprised if you find an old photo of a neighbor or new friend on the wall of the community-based pharmacy. Palo Cedro Pharmacy continues to be the place where everyone knows you by your first name, and where friends and family gather to chat about their day. Palo Cedro Pharmacy has an eclectic mix of pictures, memorabilia, and antiques collected over the last 30 years showing how the town and pharmacy has changed over the years.
