About Tehama County, California Real Estate Rockwell-like Americana
Welcome to Tehama County, California!
Tehama County, California, located in the northern part of the state, is bisected by the Sacramento River. As of 2000 its population was 56,039. Its county seat is Red Bluff. Tehama (pronounced teh-HAY-muh) County was formed from parts of Butte, Colusa and Shasta Counties in 1856.
The county is named for an early Indian village named Tehama. Suggested possible roots are the Arabic word tehama ("hot low-lands"), the Spanish word te-ja-ma-nil (shingle), or "high water" in the dialect of local Native Americans. Famous early figures known to have spent time in Tehama County include Kit Carson, who took part in a fight that gave name to Bloody Island and Battle Creek, wilderness legend and pathfinder Jedidiah Smith, explorer and first Republican presidential candidate John Fremont and William B. Ide, the first and only president of the California Republic.
East of Plumas County and below Shasta County, Tehama County is surrounded by snow-covered mountains, including those of the Trinity Mountain Range, Tehama County, like its neighbors, offers myriad outdoor activities including world-class fishing in the Sacramento River. The town of Red Bluff boasts beautiful Victorian homes, a few small museums, one of the best rodeos in the state, and friendly residents who enjoy organizing annual festivals and other events. The tiny neighboring town of Corning is known as the olive capital of the U.S. and consists mostly of farms and cattle ranches.
Nestled in the northern Sacramento Valley, a two-hour drive north from Sacramento, Tehama County is also known to locals as Tehama Country. And it is "country" in every positive sense of the word, portraying Norman Rockwell-like Americana, from fishing and hunting expeditions to ice cream socials and family-oriented street dances. Tehama County is a land of beautiful contrasts. Starting in the snowy Sierras to the east (highest point 8,200 feet), Tehama County unfolds onto rolling foothills, excellent range land, and spectacular flat-topped buttes; then sweeps down onto the fertile floor of the Sacramento River Valley (elevation at Red Bluff is 341 foot). The river valley cuts a rich, 20-mile-wide swath through the Central portion of Tehama County and provides endless varieties of outdoor recreation. The meandering Sacramento River is one of the largest salmon spawning rivers in the world.
Tehama County, California, is also known as the gateway to famous Lassen Volcanic National Park, home of one of the few active volcanos on the United States mainland, as well as to the Yolla Bolly Mountains and the Middle Eel and Ishi Wilderness Areas. With warm summers, mild winters and 25 inches of annual rainfall, smog-free Tehama County offers the ultimate in healthful, leisurely living.
